Searching for the perfect luxurious home quietly secluded in the stunning Tonto National Forest? The impeccable Desert Mountain Homes Community is the absolute choice. Desert Mountain consists of approximately 8,100 acres of land at elevations ranging from approximately 2,580 to 4,800 feet above sea level. Currently there are approximately 167 homes for Sale in Desert Mountain. The property contains mountains, wildlife, and lush high Sonoran desert vegetation, with scattered juniper at the higher elevations. At the northern boundary of the development lies the Tonto National Forest, the second largest national forest in the United States, affording miles of wilderness for hiking and horseback riding. Over 2,000 acres of the more mountainous portions of Desert Mountain Homes are restricted to remain substantially in their natural condition. Desert Mountain has 2665 total properties. There are approximately 1,800 completed homes ( a changing variable), 2375 Equity Golf Memberships (perpetual full-golf privilege equity memberships), may be issued, which translates to less than 396 such memberships per course across all six courses. The Golf Membership to the Desert Mountain Club is currently a "market based program" and the monthly fee is $1600.00. In addition to the Social Lifestyle amenities the Full golf membership includes access to all six golf courses, the state of the art practice facilities and the Jim Flick Golf Performance center.
This gentle par-72 course was designed with traditional, relaxed golfers in mind. The course provides moderate, rolling fairways, grassy catch areas, deceptively sloping putting surfaces and ample greens, but will provide you enough challenges with its elevation, length and hole changes. During the 7,211-yard course, Apache features a “disappearing green” on the eighteenth hole. With its two separate greens, the more difficult green is set into a hillside making the entire putting surface not even visible.
The fifth of Desert Mountain Golf Jack Nicklaus Signature Courses, Chiricahua, represents the pinnacle of the designer’s desert achievements. It features the highest elevation changes of all the courses, ranging from 3,000 to 3,300 feet and offers stellar views of metro Phoenix and the Valley. This par-72 course features nine holes that play uphill, eight holes that play downhill and one that plays sideways. Chiricahua is a challenging, exhilarating experience for every golfer throughout the entire 7,197 yards.
This challenging 7,019-yard course has hosted the Charles Schwab Cup Championship several times. Its signature holes are known as four of the finest “risk/reward” par fives to be found anywhere. The lush Sonoran Desert surrounds each side of the fabulous layout of the Cochise course giving players a true test of their golfing skill. Shots require precision, and contoured greens require a golfer’s skillful touch. The double green for the par-3 seventh hole and the par-5 fifteenth hole sit on a quaint island, conveying Jack Nicklaus himself to say that the Cochise is “one of the most picturesque golf courses in the world.”
Geronimo makes its way through intense boulders, deep washes, ravines and lush desert with large elevation changes, making it most visually intimidating. But this 7,420-yard course is described by Jack Nicklaus as the “strong looking course”. The first hole sets the stage with its spectacular elevation drop to the 570-yard par five fairway. The front nine may be deceiving, making you think it’s a gentle course, but the back nine will put you in your place. The eighteenth hole is a 160-yard, par 3 that requires an exacting shot over a canyon to a two-tiered green between sand bunkers.
The final course opened in 2003 with traditional Scottish links design, adjacent to the Tonto National Forest. Jack Nicklaus took “what nature gave us and tried to enhance it” when he designed Outlaw. There are no houses built around the course, so golfers are encouraged to play the game the way it was meant to be played, including eliminated forced carries from the tees with its generous landing areas and several high, low and bump and run shots. The course features gentle rolling hills, native washes and fantastic views of several Arizona landmarks such as the McDowell Mountains, Four Peaks and Pinnacle Peak.
The Renegade Course was the first Jack Nicklaus Signature Course to open at Desert Mountain in 1987. Once described by Golf Magazine as “the most versatile course in the world”, golfers can choose their level of play by varying the pin placement at each hole. The combination of the tee and pin positions throughout the course offer players of varied skill level a unique test of their game. Golf Digest has named the 7,524-yard Renegade one of “American’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses” three times and regularly among the best courses in Arizona.
No. 7 at Desert Mountain, our Par 54 course, keeps golfers of all levels challenged and entertained. Plus, it offers the perfect balance of time spent on the course, while leaving you hours in the day to enjoy other activities.
The unique gastropub clubhouse features collapsible glass walls to bring the outdoors in. It’s the perfect spot to socialize with friends and family, with bocce ball, large TV’s and fire pits.
Renegade is one of my favorites. It was designed back in 1987 and allows golfers to choose their own level of play. What makes this golf course special are the two pin placements. The Gold pins are for those golfers looking for a more challenging course. It is not what we would call a “bump and run” course. Once you get close to the green, there is usually a sand bunker or some kind of obstacle in front of the green.
The best part of playing Renegade is setting up the course for how you feel that day. For example as a female golfer, I can choose to play from the Red tee box and go to the White tees OR for a more challenging experience, play the Red tees to the Gold pins Or mix it up again and play the White tee box to the White pins. White to white is designed for the longer ball striker .Renegade also has a fantastic practice facility. Once I was practicing on the putting green and noticed a familiar looking man putting next to me. I was wondering why he was not retrieving his own golf balls and someone was rolling them back to him when he was finished his putting. Not until he looked up did I notice it was none other than Tom Watson, the golf professional with many wins on the PGA tour and now active on the Champions tour. You never know who you will see out here. And speaking of you never know who you might run into , another time, I was playing golf with a few friends and playing behind me was Tom Lehman. I did not notice him until we were almost done, when he causally came up to me and told me that I had a very nice golf swing. Well if that didn’t beat all…. how exciting for an amateur to get such a nice compliment from someone of his stature.Golfing at Renegade or for that matter at any of the golf courses in Desert Mountain is a special treat. I consider myself lucky everyday that I found this community back in 1996 and have the chance to be part of one of the Best Private Country Club Resorts in the country. It has the feel of a RESORT, but is all private.Playing golf at any level or any age is what makes Desert Mountain a special community.
